Pup, Spud, Hey You...

Soooo...we have a dog now. We think he is 1/2 doberman 1/2 german shepherd. Who knows? I've been waiting for two weeks for the owners to call and come get their dog but alas...they are not coming. I love this dog! He is soooo sweet! He just showed up one saturday and we called and called the number on his tags and no one ever replied so we figure he was "dumped". I hate to say it but it happens a lot where I live. We used to have two Beagles that were "dumped" and we loved them, too, but they kept running away. There was no fence that would keep them in. They loved to party with the Great Pyrenees down the street. His name is Buddy. We call him Tuff. Anyway...the beagles names were Lucky and Chance, and Lucky wasn't too lucky one day when he got bit by a rattle snake. So $200 (vet bill) later we decided to give Lucky and Chance a nice home where they might STAY and not run away!!!
O.K. so after a taking "Spud" (that's his name from the tag) to the lake and on various car trips we decided a trip to PetSmart was in order for new tags, coller, leash, food, etc. Now my husband is not crazy about dogs that are dumb. He LOVES smart dogs. So, you may ask, what makes a dog smart? Well, according to Burt...not pooping anywhere near the house or running away. Well...Spud (we call him Pup) has been taking monster loads all around the back porch and once in the garage. What are we to do? Can you teach an old dog new tricks like...don't poop on the back patio. I mean we have 7 acres for pete's sake. Poop somewhere out there why don't you??? I even bought this spray that was supposed to keep him from dropping friends anywhere NEAR the stuff. Nope. This morning, nice large pile right behind our fire pit. So I am hastily scooping every morning before I feed him so Burt doesn't have a cow and make us take the dog to animal control or something. :) He seems like a smart dog. I think he's just mad at me because we or shall I say Burt won't let him sleep in the house. It's the dog's own fault for relieving himself in my daughters room the first time we let him him. Bad doggy. :(
I love having him in the house. He just chills on the sofa and watches us and takes naps. If only we could get the potty thing under control. But he's a full grown dog and possibly quite old if you consider how his teeth look! ha ha. plus I think I see some gray hairs, too.
If anyone out there has any tips for potty issues for grown dogs feel free to write!

Get the book: Good owners, great dogs (or something like that) by Greg Killcommons. It will help you a lot. Oh, and feed him in the very spots he poops, not with the poop still there, but they don't poop where they eat.
My niece just pledged ZTA at Samford. She liked ADPi A LOT, but they dropped her day one. hmpf!

How about a doggie door, they work wonders, I have two dogs one that had been kept in doors in his previous life with someone else and he took to it real quick and we never have accidents, they go out the door at any hour of the day/night and it's wonderful. Before we had it, we either had to leave them out all day in the heat/cold or if we left them inside we had to come home from work on our lunch hour to let them out (very inconvenient) so YES, doggy door saved our life and our carpet too!!!
